Sustainability & Motorsport - Part 2

10 December 2020 – ISO 20121 (Sustainable Event Management Standard) certified events, organizers and venues.

We know that, in the mind of the common people, motorsport sector is not so close to a sustainable management of its events from environmental and social standpoint. However over the last 10 years much has been done.

Right Hub, as expert of the matter in motorsport sector, would like to give you some great examples across the last decade (…actually even before), that many of you may not know and expect.

With this our second contribution (haven’t you read the first one? link https://www.righthub.it/en/newsroom-en/107-sustainability-motorsport) we would like to share the “state of the art” about the ISO 20121 Sustainable Event Management Standard certification adoption in the motorsport sector.

ISO 20121 standard has been applied for the first time ever in the world at London Olympic Games in 2012, since that time many events, venues, organizers and suppliers in the world adopted it.
It is an international standard covering in a very comprehensive way all the sustainability areas (environmental, social, economic) and all the related key topics (stakeholders engagement, communication, legacy, procurement, etc.).

ISO 20121 management process requires to be reviewed and audited by a third party organization (certification body) before the event or venue or organizer or supplier can be certified.

In the recent years even in the automotive and motorsport sector the ISO 20121 has been adopted and it becomes more and more embraced due to its international standard acknowledgment, holistic approach and substantive requirements versus other not ISO frameworks.

Right Hub would like to resume the ISO 20121 certifications achieved at the date here after.

2012: the Goodwood Group in UK achieved first the BS 8903 certification then the ISO 20121 certification as venue for its key iconic motor events such as Goodwood Revival (a weekend race event staged in a historic period theme that recreates the glamour and romance of motor racing) and Festival of Speed (a summer weekend motoring garden party that features a mixture of motorsport stars and cars).

2016: the WDW - World Ducati Week, the event rally for “Ducatisti” held usually at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, achieved ISO 20121 certification. It has been renewed also in 2018 (the WDW event happens every two years). The WDW 2020 has been unfortunately cancelled due to COVID-19.

2016: Formula E London e-Prix achieved ISO 20121 certification.

2018-2019: Formula E Season 2018-2019 Championship achieved the ISO 20121 certification, the first ever worldwide motorsport championship certified in the world. It has been renewed in Season 2019-2020.

2019: EICMA (International Exhibition of Cycle and Motorcycle) has been ISO 20121 certified (6 days, 800.000 visitors and more than 1.500 exhibitors).
It has been the first ever automotive sector exhibition in the world to be certified.

It is the first ever ISO 20121 certified racetrack in the world.
